I took this from my one favorite movie “DodgeBall” as I felt it fit today’s blog. This past Sunday I ran the Gasparilla 8k with my wife. Many would ask why and the only reason I could come up with is “because I can”. The most I had ever run at one time was a 5k so this was a challenge to see how I’d hold up. I won’t lie but half way thru my shins felt like someone had smacked me with a sledge hammer.

The morning started off early enough, we were up at O dark thirty in order to try and beat the traffic. First thing my wife does when she gets there is goes to Starbucks but I chose to wait until after the race. We had a couple hours to kill so we sat around waiting for a few friends to show up, we then stretched and proceeded to the start line. The amount of people signed up was pretty ridiculous. There were people as far as you could see.

As usual my race started off strong but as my shins started to hurt my paced dropped off. My pace normally falls in the 11:00 minute mile, but today’s pace was about 2 minutes off. The worst of the 8k for me was mile 4 as I was just ready to cross that line and get food … I was starving. I managed to cross the finish line at 1:05:59 and the only thing I could honestly think about was food. The wife and I went to Starbucks so we could get drinks and decide what we wanted to have for lunch. We decided to have something “Freaky Fast” so we went to Jimmie Johns. What would I choose for lunch after an 8 you’d ask? Well I chose an Italian, a bag of thinny chips and powerade.

Pretty much the rest of the day is a blur as most of it was spent sleeping on the couch. If I had to do all over again I would, but I’d definitely want to change my pace time.

Have you ever done any races? If not have you ever thought of any and which one?

Everyone has their dream they’d like to accomplish in life. Well, for one person I know their dream is to be the best at what he wants to do with his life and that’s graphic design. He’s able to do anything from simple flyer design all the way up to designing custom paintball jerseys and everything in between. I’ve spoken with Trevis of Trevis Meseroll Designs for about a year now and had the pleasure of a face-to-face meeting with him in late October of 2012. He was down visiting family and was also here to watch what very well could be his favorite sport, paintball. What made this event extra special for him was that he won a contest designing a shirt for G.I. Sports, which was yet another of his many accomplishments he’s been able to achieve since he started in 2009. We watched our favorite professional team, Tampa Bay Damage, play and spoke of many things. I learned many things about him that day and I’ll share with you. If I could choose only one word to describe Trevis, it would have to be passionate. It’s clear in his designs that he truly loves what he does and continuously strives to reach for the stars in all that he designs.

Well if I was to sum up Valentine’s Day 2013 for Nanci I’d have to say “Sneaky Sneaky”. This morning started out with a plan and a list; yes I procrastinated and waited until the last minute as usual. First on my list was a stop at the Massage Studio in Tampa, the wife’s favorite place to get a massage and I do mean favorite. She loves the feel of the studio as well as the friendly staff and I can pretty much guarantee she’s already looking over the calendar to see when she can go if she hasn’t booked it already.

Second on the hit list was the card, which will surprise you when I tell you how long it takes to find that special card. I can pretty much guarantee within 2 minutes tops I can have the perfect card picked out (and my system hasn’t failed me yet). I’ll sit there and just browse the card and can tell you which one is the perfect one for her even before reading the inside. Not quite sure how it works exactly, but I always manage to pick the right one.

Third on the list is the wine which was a no brainer, although I didn’t give into temptation and I bought her the smaller one. So the wine of choice for her was a Barefoot Moscato which anyone who knows the wife will agree that it’s her favorite. Funny but I remember the days she didn’t like wine and now we always seem to have a bottle in the house.

Now for the most important part which would be the flowers. Flowers for the wife are generally hit or miss as she’d be perfectly happy without. I chose to get them because I felt it would be a good change and a pleasant surprise. Then my next thought came to mind and I ended up with two bouquets of flowers. Two for the wife you ask, well not exactly. I decided to buy flowers for my mother-in-law as she deserves flowers too and my father-in-law would have wanted her to have some too. He passed in December of 2010 but I feel as he was there inside my head telling to buy the flowers. All in all I feel like it was a great Valentine’s Day and what I feel is going to be one of the best years yet.

What special things did you do for your significant other for Valentine’s Day? How did it make them feel?

For those who have read my New Year’s Resolution blog you’ll know that one of my goals was to run my first timed 5k. Well it’s been a month and I’ve done three so far, 2 of which were timed and 1 was for fun. The first one was the glow run and it was obviously a night run and time wasn’t really a factor. This was truly my first 5k and I had a blast.

My first official timed event was supposed to be the Rock N Roll mini marathon, but I signed up for the Best Damn race a few days prior to the event. The day of it was freezing and I was thinking what the hell did I get myself into, but after the start I threw on the iPod and went into a zone. From there on out the only thing going thru my mind was concentrating on the task at hand, which was completing the run. Seeing how this was my first run I had planned on a 45:00 minute run. Pleasantly surprised I was when I crossed the finish line at 38:25.

This past weekend we ran the Rock N Roll event in St Petersburg, Fl. The wife ran the half marathon but I chose to run the 5k. Not knowing what the parking situation would be like we found ourselves down there extra early to allow for parking and walking to the start line. With an hour or so to kill prior to the event we walked around and tried to keep as warm as possible while mentally preparing for the event. Some funny things worth mentioning were some of my songs and how they showed up while on shuffle. The first song worth mentioning was Tone Loc vs. Salt N Peppa Wild Thing vs. Push it. Random first song but maybe my iPod was onto something as Mile 1 seemed to be a fast one for me. Everything else was a blur up until the end when my song playing when I crossed the finish line was Midnight Star Freekazoid. While I found the funniest one of them all was when I was listening to my iPod still as Nanci crossed the finish line several hours later. Her song for finishing her half marathon according to my iPod was MC Hammer here comes the hammer. I just laughed as anyone who knows my wife would find that totally hilarious. When crossing the finish line for this event I turned in a 36:59 for the run. Not what I was shooting for but a respectable number from what everyone tells me (especially for my second timed event).

While I’ll admit I don’t get the same rush others do from running the race and crossing that finish Line. I do understand where they are coming from as it’s the same rush I get from playing paintball and winning the game.

What sport or activity do you get a rush from doing? Have you been following thru on your New Year’s Resolutions?

Well after much deliberation and thought I’ve decided to call it quits. I’ve thought long and hard about it and there’s just no way around it. This weekend is officially the last weekend Starbucks and I will be together. I’ll make it a weekend treat from time to time, but the day of my regular visits are a thing of the past. It’s not the money, well maybe a little but more so what it doesn’t do for me. Weight loss and Starbucks go together like McDonalds and a Body Builder. So this weekend as I sit and relax while enjoying every last drink, I’ll also be thinking of how much money I’ll be saving and how much better I’ll be treating my body. A long conversation with someone who I feel has become a close friend after all the stories and laughs we’ve shared told me I need to find a way to curve the sweet tooth and kick my workout in the ass. So as of now it’ll just be a weekend treat.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve had to say goodbye to? Has it managed to make it way back into your life?

I’ve determined over the years that I have an addictive personality when it comes to certain things. When I find something I’m into I tend to get to the point where I’m almost obsessed. My latest obsession is the scale, it is for this reason alone the wife and I don’t have one in our house. I’ll admit there are days that I’ll jump on the scale at work as many as three times in a single day. While I know this can be bad for motivation, I find myself drawn to that contraption that either makes us happy or can make us cry with the displaying of just a few little numbers. Keeping that in mind I find this obsession to be a love/hate relationship. I love it when the #’s are down, but hate it when my #’s are up. Often counter-productive and uncontrollable at times this seems to play head games with me and can alter my mood tremendously for better or worse.

What is your latest obsession? Do you have an addictive personality as well?

This past Friday 2/1/2013 we helped celebrate the closing of a chapter for a close friend, but also got to wish him luck on his next chapter. A friend of many has decided to move to Oregon. While some people would say ok what’s the big deal he’s moving? He’ll be leaving Monday for Oregon but the way he chose to go is what makes it unique. See he’ll be walking/hiking to Oregon from Tampa, FL which is the new chapter in his life. For those who know him this would come as no surprise as he’s often spoke of moving to Oregon. In this world you’ll meet two types of people “Those who dream” or “Those who do”. For anyone who knows Dave they’ll tell you without hesitation he’s one of the ones who takes those dreams and goes for it. While he’ll be missed by many we are all excited for him on the beginning of his next chapter in the book of life. Good luck with your trip and be safe, I can’t wait to read about your cross-country adventures.

What dreams have you acted upon in the past? How did they change your life?

As part of my New Year’s Resolution I was to start working out again. While I’ve introduced cardio into my routine by walking with the wife it’s still not consistent. Sitting at work today I was thinking about what I wanted to do as far as working out and I’m totally confused. When working out previously I was doing boot camp three times a week and not focusing on heavy weight but more on losing weight. As I sit and look at my workouts prior to boot camp I was concentrating on building muscle. At the ripe old age of 40 I’m conflicted on where I want to go. On one hand I can stand to lose about 30 pounds which is my goal for the year but I’d also like to get in better physical condition.

Cali

Diet has been key in weight loss for me as I’ve been lacking with the workouts. The wife is pretty good about keeping me in check in that aspect to insure weight loss. Snacks and sweets continue to tempt me at work and I occasionally give in but feel extremely guilty after the fact. That’s part of the battle but the harder part is motivation. Motivation and commitment to go to the gym and make the changes I’m wanting to but only I can make this happen.

Tarpon

Workouts are the most confusing part for me at this point. I’ve spent the last four weeks looking over some of my old workout sheets and trying to figure out my course of action. Part of me wants to do three days a week like I was during boot camp and focus on weight loss. On the other hand I want to max out my time and do a six day workout schedule breaking up my body parts into three days and then repeating this twice a week. On the other hand I’m thinking five days a week with two days off is another option. I did the six day workouts and while I like the results I don’t think I was a very pleasant to deal with because I was always working out and somewhat miserable. I love the results but the constant work killed me mentally as well as physical. So I sit here conflicted on which route to go and need to make a choice soon.

How many days a week do you work out? If you could go back and do it over would you choose the same path?

Fun, exciting, stress-relief are three words that immediately come to mind when I think of the word “Hobby”. It’s important to remember those hobbies are there to give you a release from the day to day stresses of Life. Once they hit the point of stressing you out a break may be in order. It’s generally time to remove yourself from the stress and drama that may have driven you to the point of no longer enjoying that hobby. It doesn’t mean that hobby is gone forever, but time apart is what’s needed to regain your love for that hobby. In the meantime focus on the present and all that it has to offer as you never know when your time to return will come.

When do you decide to finally step back from a hobby? How long was it before you finally went back?
